Judgmental Reasoning for Expert Systems

چکیده

We present a new system for plausible reasoning in expert systems. It is an extension of the Horn clause subset of first order logic, and is distinguished by its use of non-numeric certainties and the assignment of certainties to logical formulae rather than events. Model theoretic and ftxpoint semantics are sketched for this language. An implementation in the logic programming language Prolog is described and the advantages of the system are discussed. 1. Introduction Some kind of judgemental or probabilistic reasoning forms an essential part of many expert systems. The need for such reasoning arises whenever knowledge is incomplete or data uncertain. This is the case in many of the problem domains to which expert systems are applied. In this paper we present a system for judge-mental reasoning which differs in two respects from the more usual approaches. It uses a non-numeric representation for belief, and assigns certainties to logical formu-lae rather than events. It is an extension to the work described in (Shapiro 1983).

Expert Systems for Forecasting

Expert systems use rules to represent experts’ reasoning in solving problems. The rules are based on knowledge about methods and the problem domain. To acquire knowledge for an expert system, one should rely on a variety of sources, such as textbooks, research papers, interviews, surveys, and protocol analysis. Protocol analysis is especially useful if the area to be modeled is complex or if ex...

Knowledge Systems: Principles and Practice

We describe what is expected of a knowledgebased expert system, and the components from which such a system is constructed. We give a view of how an interplay between principles and practice has helped the knowledge system field to develop, and we give simple examples to show that reasoning techniques based on formal logic are now starting to provide a useful coupling between scientific and eng...

Qualitative Reasoning for Financial Assessments: A Prospectus

Historically, the evolution of expert systems has been driven by scientifically based fields such as medicine, geology, and computer engineering. More recently, expert system developers have turned their attention to the highly judgmental decision tasks found in business and finance We introduce the corporate assessment problem, point out the limitations of current expert system approaches to t...

Methodological Simplicity in Expert System Construction

Probabilistic rules and their variants have recently supported several successful applications of expert systems, in spite of the difficulty of committing informants to particular conditional probabilities or “certainty factors,” and in spite of the experimentally observed insensitivity of system performance to perturbations of the chosen values. Here we survey recent developments concerning re...

The ‘Right Brain’ Architecture of a Holonic Manufacturing System

The goal of holonic manufacturing systems is to attain in manufacturing the benefits that holonic organization provides to living organisms and societies, i.e., stability in the face of disturbances, adaptability and flexibility in the face of change, and efficient use of available resources. A key attribute of this kind of system is the ability to define the reasoning model for independent hol...
